Fruits and Vegetables

March is National Nutrition Month which focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. Choosing a variety of healthful foods across and within all food groups helps reduce the risk of preventable, lifestyle-related chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Did you know?

  • 3 in 5 children don’t eat enough fruit
  • Less than 1 in 5 children eat enough vegetables
  • More than half of children between the ages of 9 - 13 fall short on their dietary calcium intake
  • Close to 20% of children between the ages of 6 - 11 consume more calories than they probably need
  • Typical American diets exceed the recommended intake levels or limits in four categories: calories from solid fats and added sugars; refined grains; sodium; and saturated fat
