In Memory of Don Policella

It is with great sadness that we share the tragic news of the passing of Don Policella.

Don, Director of The Center for Child Welfare, had been fighting illness, but passed away quite unexpectedly last week in his home in St. Petersburg, FL. Don worked for more than 20 years in Florida’s child welfare system of care.

Don began his work at the University of South Florida in 2003 at which time he was named the Statewide Coordinator for design and implementation of Community-Based Care Readiness Assessments. Don traveled around the state working with all 21 Community Based Care Agencies in Florida. In 2007, Don created what is now The Center for Child Welfare, which includes Florida’s Center for Child Welfare, Florida’s Quality Parenting Initiative – Just in Time Training, and several other QPI/JIT Training websites for Nevada, California, and Cuyahoga County in Ohio. His vision for these projects is clear. His number one goal was to provide the information and support to child welfare professionals and caregivers in the hopes of making their “jobs” just a little bit easier. Additionally, his advocacy, care, and concern for young people within the child welfare system was apparent to all that worked with and knew him.

Don was also an amazing father and grandfather. Don’s love for his two sons, Brian and John, was clear to anyone who knew him. In addition, Don leaves behind 9 grandchildren who again were the highlight of his life. He loved them all dearly.

All of us at The Center and the University will miss him greatly. He was a friend, colleague, and a leader.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 4th at 2pm at Memorial

Park Cemetery. 5750 49th Street N, St. Petersburg, FL  http://www.memorialparkfuneralhome.com/
